Hackers, long the bane of nearly all internet users, have a new target: child porn sites. Anonymous, a shadowy web of internet hackers, has recently taken down forty sites purported to contain images of child pornography. Experts have condemned the attacks, claiming that they could potentially have interfered with ongoing investigations. Personally, I’d like to see Anonymous team up with the police on this one. I know that it would go completely against Anonymous’ anti-establishment ethos , but I think that they could do a lot of good in this capacity. Taking down the sites by itself won’t actually accomplish anything–they’ll go back online, and users will keep exchanging images. Only by identifying users and suppliers can the hackers ensure that the children who are currently being exploited will be safe. War makes strange bedfellows at times, and sometimes the best way to accomplish your goal really does involve getting in bed with the enemy.

This week’s fun app of the week has kept me playing on my IPAD and Iphone all weekend, it is called Tiny Wings. I am sure that most of you have heard or even played this game but after some time of boycotting it because it costs money I finally downloaded it. I typically try to avoid apps that cost money because there are so many other free entertaining apps. Tiny Wings is only 99 cents and is for the Iphone, Android and can be played on an IPAD. The object of the game is to use the hills and to reach the farthest islands and get the highest score. You lose when the night catches up to your tiny wing and it falls asleep. The player will earn more daylight by advancing to farther islands. Every time you nail three great slides in a row you reach fever mode where your score multiplies the longer you stay in fever mode. When you mess up on a jump you lose your fever. The player can also grab other bonuses for doing great jumps and by jumping high enough to reach the clouds. There are also speed coins that will launch the player across great distances. These come in handy especially after a bad jump when the tiny wing could really use a boost. Like most games there are coins, which equal three points per coin.

The game also features numerous objectives. These include playing the game upside down, reaching the 9th island, accumulating certain scores and being in fever mode for over thirty seconds to name a few. After completing a series of three objectives the player earns a new nest. Each nest adds another score multiplayer thus creating higher scores. The only downside to this game is that there is no IPAD version you have to download the Iphone version and stretch the screen. This game may be the most addictive game I have played in awhile. I give Tiny Wings five wings out of five.

The wait if finally over for Apple’s latest Mac operating system. Announced for sometime in July, Mac OS X Lion finally was made available to the public today. Lion can be purchased in the Mac App Store for $30.00. The newest operating system for apple supposedly has 250 new features to make working on your Mac a smoother experience. Most of these new features are part of Apple’s way to make the computer more mobile and to make the interface a little more like the IPAD. One of these new features that is sure to gain much popularity is the addition of multi touch gestures. These allow you to swipe you fingers across the track pad in a variety of ways each yielding a different result such as pinch to zoom and the three finger swipe to switch between Mac Apps. This addition also completely integrates the Mac App Store and its Apps completely into the Mac hardware. Other new additions include full screen apps, launch pad, resume, airdrop, and auto save. Launch pad allows you to minimize all of you open windows and are replaced by all of your apps. You can arrange, group, or delete you apps just like how the IPAD and Iphone do. Resume allows you to go back to exactly where you left off when reopening that app. Airdrop allows you to send files to other computers within 30 feet of yours without the use of the Internet. And one other addition that comes with Lion is auto save, which does exactly what it says automatically saves files so that you do not have to.

For those who are switching to Lion from a PC will have their fair share of problems getting adjusted because there really is not any operating system like this. It will also be somewhat difficult for current Mac users as well unless they have an Iphone or IPAD. Many of the Iphone and IPAD features are now fully integrated into Lion. For those who do not have the free Mac App Store or are waiting to buy a hard copy of Lion instead of downloading it will have to wait until August and it will cost $69.99 instead of the $29.99 downloading price.

This week’s app of the week is a must for the tech procrastinator. Many of you are probably familiar with StumbleUpon on your desktop. If you are not then here is a small explanation. You press the “stumble” button and you are taken to a random website based on your preferences. Well StumbleUpon also has their own IPAD and Iphone app as well. This app pretty much does the same things that the internet browser does with only a few slight differences. One thing that I noticed and happened to like is the ability for the app to request more than one page at once. From here you can choose from a selection of random sites instead of automatically being taken to one.

However, this app does have several shortcomings when compared to its browser version. First off is its lack of videos. Unfortunately, Apple still does not have FlashPlayer, so when stumbling you rarely stumble upon any videos. Another issue I found is that fact that you actually have to leave the app in order to save images or copy links. What I mean by this is that you have to press a button that then loads the current page you have stumbled upon on the Safari browser. Only here can links be copied and pictures can be saved. One of the biggest issues I have is that when you exit the app you lose the site you are at. The app automatically restarts once you have left the app. For these reasons, I give the StumbleUpon app a 3.5 out of 5 stars because it does have some major shortcomings, but never the less, you ill still be as addicted to it as you are to the regular browser version.

Well so much for the unlimited DVD and streaming deal from Netflix. The current plan, which most Netflix subscriber’s use includes unlimited streaming and unlimited single DVD at a time with unlimited streaming for $9.99, is no longer being offered. In its place Netflix will no offer two separate plans. Netflix will still offer its unlimited streaming plan at its current price of $7.99. However if you would to also have the ability to have unlimited singe DVD’s at a time, it will run you an additional $7.99. Now members who want to have both services continued will have to pay nearly $16 a month instead of the old $9.99. These new changes will affect all new customers immediately and will begin for all existing customers on September first.

These new price hikes come as part of Netflix’s continued shift to focus more on online streaming than mail order DVD rentals. This is also a result of Movie Studios demanding higher prices for their content because less and less people are paying for DVD’s. Sony Pictures actually ended their partnership with Netflix resulting in their films no longer be offered by the service. This is a result of studios wanting more money because so many people are streaming films and Sony only gets a fixed percentage. The price hike however was met with the renewal of the partnership between Netflix and NBC Universal.

As one could expect the price hikes were not met with very much enthusiasm. Netflix blogs were filled with complaints over the new prices. Many people have threatened to switch to rival services like Hulu and Amazon while others have stated that they will just stock up on DVD’s. Only time will tell how this will effect Netflix.
