Godudu, a multilingual social network, has taken steps to remove the language barriers that currently prevent truly free communication on the internet. Currently, the site can translate user’s post and comments into English, Russian and Arabic, presumably with more languages on the way. While the multilingual approach does give Godudu a distinct advantage over social media sites that do not provide such translations, it remains to be seen whether Godudu can break into a network already saturated by such giants as Facebook, Myspace and Twitter.
The UN has called on all countries to have nation broadband strategies in place by 2015. At the time, the UN would like to see 60% of people living in the developed world and 50% of people living in developing countries online. The UN would also like to see internet access available to 40% of households in the developing world and stressed that broadband services should be affordable for all, costing less than 5% of one’s monthly expenses.
